The Japan Sumo Association meted out punishments Thursday to a stablemaster and a coach who arranged for dozens of yakuza gangsters to receive special ringside seats at the Nagoya tournament in July.
Stablemaster Kise, 40, was demoted two ranks to toshiyori, or elder, from iin, or committee member, and coach Kiyomigata, 64, was reprimanded.
The two men obtained passes that went to nearly 50 members of the Kodo-kai crime syndicate, based in Nagoya, in prime seating areas.
Wrestlers in Kise's stable were placed under the management of the Dewanoumi-ichimon faction that oversees the stable of the same name, and several others.
Four or five years ago, after being asked by a business acquaintance, Kise apparently began asking Kiyomigata to provide passes for ringside seats.
The two men had previously been members of the same stable, called Mihogaseki.
They told a meeting of the association Thursday that they were not aware the passes would go to yakuza.
