PRETORIA, June 29 (Reuters) - Paraguay held their nerve to beat Japan 5-3 on penalties on Tuesday to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time after the match had finished in a goalless stalemate.
Japan's Yuichi Komano hit the crossbar with his team's third spot kick, the only one missed in the first penalty shootout of the finals.
Paraguay, who became the fourth South American team in the last eight joining Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, will now meet Spain.
"God was on our side. Now we want more," said Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino, who was in floods of tears at the end of the shootout.
"Thank god we got through, Paraguay have never gone so far," said striker Oscar Cardozo, who scored Paraguay's winning penalty.
"We are all very happy, me because I scored the penalty and got it in, thank God. It was a very difficult match because Japan too had very good players."
The South Americans had enjoyed more possession during the 0-0 draw which produced relatively few clear goal chances at either end.
A cagey opening brought few clear-cut chances but the game sparked to life in the 20th minute, Eiji Kawashima saving with his knee from Lucas Barrios, then Daisuke Matsui cracking the Paraguay crossbar with a curling 25-metres effort.
An out-of-sorts Honda had his first clear sight of goal in the 38th minute, striking the ball first time with the outside of his favored left foot just past the post.
Paraguay looked set to open the scoring 10 minutes into the second half when Edgar Benitez broke into the left side of the penalty area but his shot was deflected wide by Yuji Nakazawa.
Japan, who had torn Denmark apart in their final group game with some delightful free-flowing soccer, struggled to maintain possession in the second half and their trademark quick-fire counter-attacks fizzled in the final third.
With the score tied at 0-0 after 90 minutes, Japan made a bright start to extra time, Yoshito Okubo bearing down on the Paraguay defense with a surging run from deep in his own half.
Paraguay almost unlocked the Japanese defense seven minutes into extra time when Claudio Morel released substitute Valdez in the box but goalkeeper Kawashima got out smartly to block.
Paraguay's Edgar Barreto had his head in his hands moments later when the ball dropped to him in a crowded penalty area but he could do no better than flick the ball over the bar.

Ump's blown call costs Galarraga perfect game
Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game June 2 with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.
First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald's grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga coverring the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.
The veteran ump regretted it.
"It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the out of it," Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires' locker room. "I just cost that kid a perfect game."
Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said Joyce asked to speak with Galarraga. Denied the first perfect game in Tigers history, Galarraga appreciated the gesture. (AP)

The Japan Sumo Association meted out punishments Thursday to a stablemaster and a coach who arranged for dozens of yakuza gangsters to receive special ringside seats at the Nagoya tournament in July.
Stablemaster Kise, 40, was demoted two ranks to toshiyori, or elder, from iin, or committee member, and coach Kiyomigata, 64, was reprimanded.
The two men obtained passes that went to nearly 50 members of the Kodo-kai crime syndicate, based in Nagoya, in prime seating areas.
Wrestlers in Kise's stable were placed under the management of the Dewanoumi-ichimon faction that oversees the stable of the same name, and several others.
Four or five years ago, after being asked by a business acquaintance, Kise apparently began asking Kiyomigata to provide passes for ringside seats.
The two men had previously been members of the same stable, called Mihogaseki.
They told a meeting of the association Thursday that they were not aware the passes would go to yakuza.

United Nations (U.N.) environment officials say nations must build "greener economies" or risk emptying oceans of fish and creating water shortages for two-fifths of the planet in coming decades.
A new report previewed by U.N. environment chief Achim Steiner says virtually all commercial fisheries could collapse by 2050 unless the world scales back $27 billion (¥2.5 trillion) a year in fishing subsidies down to $8 billion (¥730 billion) a year.
It says water supplies could be 40 percent less than what are needed by 2030, if no improvements are made in water use, one of 11 areas the U.N. targets for improvement.

An Asahi Shimbun survey on Okinawa Prefecture residents found that 76 percent of respondents oppose the latest relocation plan proposed by Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.
Only 13 percent of respondents said they support the plan to move some troops and training functions from U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to Tokunoshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, and the airfield to another part of Okinawa Prefecture.
The survey was conducted Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of Saturday's 38th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan.
Valid responses were obtained from 746 residents.
Fifty-three percent of respondents said they support moving a U.S. base from Okinawa Prefecture to another part of Japan, up from 38 percent in an Asahi Shimbun survey in 2009.
Thirty-six percent said they oppose such a move, down from 46 percent in 2009.

David Cameron has become Britain's youngest Prime Minister in almost 200 years as the head of a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition which was agreed during a day of extraordinary drama in Westminster.
The new coalition is Britain's first since the Second World War. Mr Cameron's 23-strong Cabinet will include five Liberal Democrats, giving the party their first taste of real power for 70 years. Nick Clegg, their leader, becomes Deputy Prime Minister.
The Tory leader was formally appointed by the Queen just minutes after Gordon Brown met her to tender his resignation, following the collapse of Labour's talks with the Liberal Democrats aimed at keeping the Conservatives out of power.
